Our Florida Vacation and Hurricane Matthew

Hello Friends!

Do you ever feel that you need a vacation after your vacation?  That’s how I feel this week.  I have so much to catch up on at work that I can’t see my desk!

We traveled to Ft. Myers, FL with the entire family!  That includes 7 adults and 3 children.  The 3 children are 4 years old, 3 months and 2 months!  We rented a 12 passenger van, which did allow for luggage and all that “stuff” you bring along for the kiddos, but not much room for legs!

Our Vacation

The babies, for the most part, did really well.  I know I felt for them being strapped in a car seat with no view for 10 hours or more and I would have been screaming just a loud if I could get away with it!  Pretty little Addison did really well as the big sister and cousin.  She played on her kindle, her leap pad and my mini I-pad and then she colored.  Naps were in there as well for all of the kiddos, but probably not as long as the mommas wanted. lol

The trip was requested by my mother-in-law who recently passed away at the end of August.  As I had posted earlier, she had been battling cancer for many years and was nearing her end of life.   At her request, my husband (such a sweetie!) promised her that he would make sure all of the family took her ashes to Florida to be buried with my father-in-law.

It was a beautiful day!  The wind was lightly blowing over the cemetery and there wasn’t a cloud in the sky.  It was very quiet and peaceful and she would have loved the day.  She would have even laughed at Addison’s question about the small box holding her remains.  (out of the mouths of babes!) “Mamaw?” (that’s me) “How is Mamaw Ingle in that small box?  She was bigger than that.”  I looked at my husband and smiled and then told her that she should go ask her mommy about that because that was an explanation that needed to come from her.  She was okay with that answer! whew!

Well as we were sitting inside the funeral home waiting for the “paperwork” she asked her mommy.  My daughter’s explanation was so appropriate.  She said “Sometimes people want to be cremated and that just makes them smaller.”  Again, she was okay with that answer and she skipped away for another piece of candy!  It was simple, to the point and just on a 4-year old’s level.  Who would have thought it!

We all headed to Applebee’s for lunch and a toast, again requested by my dear mother-in-law, with perfect Margaritas.  It was a fitting tribute to a wonder lady!  We miss her.

The rest of our time in Florida was spent catching up with the kiddos, swimming in the pool and doing some site-seeing, normal vacation things.  All three of our kids were born in Ft. Myers and Cape Coral so of course we had to drive by the old homestead.  It’s a different color and there are way more houses around it, but it is still there:)

Hurricane Matthew came ashore during the night before we were to leave, but since we were on the west side of Florida all we experienced was a little rain and some major wind.  It was very hard to keep that van on the road in that wind and we had to switch drivers three times!

Of course we really weren’t thinking when we headed down to Florida.  When we stopped in Georgia, about half-way down, we should have booked the same rooms again for our trip back up.  We knew about the storm coming but didn’t even think that we would have trouble finding a hotel on the way home.  Well, let me tell you that when a Hurricane comes towards a coast everyone flees inland.  There was not a hotel to be had along I-75 from Ft. Myers to Knoxville, TN!  We left Florida around 10:00 a.m. and drove into my brother-in-law’s place at 1:15 a.m..  That’s a long time for us, let alone two babies.  NEVER AGAIN!  We fly next time! lol

We really did have a good time though!  Florida is a really nice place to vacation and the house we rented was awesome.  I’m really glad to be home though and so anxious to start playing with my crafts!  We’ve moved into my folks house until we close on our new one and my dear mother has made a place for me on a laundry table in the basement so I can still work my Stampin’ Up business.  Love her to pieces!  So over the next week I should have plenty of samples to share with you as well as some mason jar crafts.

I will share one card I made for a dear friend who lost her father while we were gone:(  The card is made from the Thoughtful Branches stamp set.  Sorry for all the mess around it. lol  I was opening the Tin of Cards set and sorting all the goodies:)
